Bigger, Bolder, Better – Team Maria will ride for #CaliforniaForAll

July 12, 2019

Dear Team Maria,

Team Maria is back — and we’re bigger and bolder than ever!

Just like each of you, creating a world of inclusivity and friendship inspires me to return to the Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle year after year and to celebrate all abilities. As captain of Team Maria, I am excited to join you once again as we bring our passion for inclusion and friendship together to ride in the 2019 Hearst Castle Challenge.

It is also my pleasure to share that this year Team Maria will be riding to build a #CaliforniaForAll, alongside my friend and co-captain Gov. Gavin Newsom! I’m thrilled to have Gov. Newsom back as we celebrate his loyalty to Best Buddies and Team Maria and his mission to make the Golden State inclusive of all Californians at this year’s Hearst Castle Challenge. He has been my partner in this race for nearly a decade, and now, he’s actually governor of the state! Imagine what can happen for you if you join Team Maria!

Together, Gov. Newsom and I want to build a community of inclusion and friendship. This mission powers both of us and we carry that with us on this beautiful ride. Last year, I was so inspired to see Team Maria come together to honor our dear friend Nancy McFadden and her fierce commitment to making the world a better place. I’m confident that this year’s Hearst Castle Challenge will be no different as we gather alongside Best Buddies and Gov. Newsom to continue toward this goal.

I have been the chair of the Hearst Castle Challenge nearly every year since its inception, raising over $50 million dollars to support inclusion, friendship and opportunity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) – Team Maria alone has raised $2.8 million toward this mission. I am so proud of the strides made to advance inclusion and friendship in our communities, across California and around the world. We’ve done well, but we’ve got to push the needle further… so join us.

Get registered. Start training. Start fundraising. Set a bold vision for yourself and this team.

What does it mean to ride with Team Maria? It means you are a person of passion and purpose. A person who respects the dignity and ability of all people, especially those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). To us, it means you are a person who wants to move the needle and make a difference. And what a difference we need to make! We have more people with IDD in our state than any other —many awaiting jobs and opportunities. By riding for #CaliforniaForAll, we can help provide that.

We’re the original people’s team and we need you, the people — of all ages, genders, races, backgrounds and abilities — to ride with us. We’re by far the most fun. We’re by far the most passionate. And, we’re by far going to beat all those other teams with big corporations behind them.

Join me and fellow Team Maria riders on Saturday, September 7, 2019 for another beautiful journey along California’s breathtaking coastline, riding to build a #CaliforniaForAll. Sign up for Team Maria here, and visit for more information on our team, the Hearst Castle Challenge, and how to help us reach our fundraising goals.

Let’s make ourselves bigger, bolder and better than ever before. After all, we’re riding for all of California now.

Power on, Power Forward. We need more energy now than ever!
