How long have you been involved with Best Buddies?
This is my first official engagement with Best Buddies, but I’ve heard for many years from friends about the great work of this organization.
What inspired you to join Team Maria?
The camaraderie and dedication of the Team Maria members was really motivating. Not only does the team care deeply about helping people with developmental disabilities, but there’s also a sense of genuine interest in building a community around the team.
Why is the Best Buddies program, and its mission, so important?
Through the experiences of my brother, I’ve seen first-hand the challenges people with developmental disabilities face. The work of Best Buddies in facilitating the independence and dignity of these wonderful people has helped profoundly reshape how society, families and communities can positively their and our lives together. Fundamentally, Best Buddies gives so many lives meaning and purpose — this is what it is all about.
What motivates you to participate in the Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle?
I’m motivated to participate by the idea that people, like my brother, will have the trajectory of their lives improved so that they can do and be more than expected. The community around Best Buddies puts this important mission in context for me, and the mission will propel me through the 100 mile challenge and my fundraising goal.
